One of the best family outings is picnic. This
is a time where a family has bonding and quality time spent outside their home.
Picnics can of two major types i.e. a dry picnic where all the food is prepared
from home and the other one is to cook at the picnic spot itself. The amount of
fun, frolic and quality time spent during a picnic hugely depends on the picnic
spot. A great picnic spot means a great picnic.
In Darjeeling the months of January and
February can be termed as the picnic season for the locals here. The reason for
it to be called a picnic season is because at this time of year all the picnic
spots are crowded. There are many picnic spots in and around Darjeeling such as
Kali Jhora, Doodey, Rock gardens, Gwaligoat, tiger hill etc.
Sun rise at tiger hills |
One of the nearest picnic spots from town is
“Tiger hill”. Located nearby Jorebunglow this place is the highest point in the
vicinity of Darjeeling. The tiger hill was actually an observatory during its
glory days, however presently it is being used as a view point and a picnic
spot. The hill is covered with fir, pine and bamboo forests which makes it a
really refreshing place to visit.
The undulating hills filled with bamboo seem
to whistle when the winds pass through it. The view of Darjeeling that one can
see from here is simply spectacular and that is not all. The entire
Kanchendzonga range that stretches across the horizon can be seen from here.
The hill is also famed as a sunrise point. The
sunrise that one can see from here is so magical and spellbinding that one
needs to pinch him/herself to tell it is real. Many flock this place just to
see the sunrise.
If one is going on a picnic to tiger hill it
is better to start of early to witness the magical sunrise or one could plan an
overnight picnic and return the next day after seeing the sunrise. This is a
part that should not be missed out on when here.
Atop the hill the temperatures are quiet low
so it is advisable to dress in warm clothes. Dry picnics are the usual picnics
that take place here as lighting a fire is not allowed due to the danger of a
forest fire. There are large meadows and plateaus where you can sit and enjoy
the magic of Tiger hill while bonding with your family.
Picnic spots as beautiful as this is hard to
come by so when you are in the “Queen of Hills” you should definitely plan one
here.(see also- http://www.darjeelingtourismpackages.com/tour-packages-to-north-east.html)
