Digha
is one of the most popular sea resorts of West Bengal. Located at a distance of
around 187 km south west of Kolkata, Digha, has a low incline with an
attractive sand beach stretching up to 7 km in length involving gentle rolling
waves.
The beauty of this place is captivating. The beach is dotted with
Casuarina plantations along the coast adding to its beauty. Tourists can enjoy
the romantic views of sunrise and sunset from the beach. The view of the salty
waters of the Bay of Bengal, reflecting the rays during the sunset or sunrise,

Shankarpur beach:
Shankarpur
is a virgin beach which was recently discovered. The place is located near
Digha, at a distance of around 14 km and can be reached by catching any of the
buses plying to Digha. The place has been developed as a sea resort with hotels and the beach offers all the luxuries of a
private beach.
The beach boasts a clean
as well as unspoiled environment, dotted with casuarina groves by the side of a
gentle sea and a pleasant climate throughout the year. Apart from featuring the
endless stretch of sands meeting the sea, the chief attraction of this place, is
the Shankarpur Fishing Harbour Project. During the night, the beach is normally
deserted and the atmosphere is quite peaceful.
Junput:
Junput
is another beach resort of West Bengal, which offers a pleasing sight of
casuarina trees swaying in the rhythm of the gentle breeze. Located at a
distance of 40 km from Digha, the beach was before overlooked. Later, Junput
became a recognized location due to scientific research and industry. A centre
for studies in marine biology is the chief feature of this area and the place
also holds a farm for breeding ducks.
The natural beauty of the beach is
unspoilt and the brackish water fish cultivation and research are done here by
the State Government Fisheries Department. Leisurely walks along the long
stretched sands of the beach and picnic are some of the popular activities
enjoyed the visitors at this place.
Shiva
temple, Chandaneshwar: Shiva temple is an old renowned temple, situated at a
distance of just 8 km from Digha, which falls in Balasore District of Orissa. The
temple is certainly worth a visit if you are seeking for some spiritual
intervention.
Food
Over
here, visitors can enjoy some delicious seaside snacks like soft boiled eggs
and fried Soft Shell Crabs or Salt Water shrimps. The restaurants of Digha also
offer authentic Bengali cuisine as well as Chinese and Continental dishes. Also,

can buy some interesting souvenirs, as local handicraft items; products from

How to Reach
By rail
Train
services to Digha are available from Howrah Railway Station in Kolkata, from
where it takes around 4 hrs to reach Digha. Kharagpur is a significant junction
on the way to Digha and it also has the longest Railway Platform in the world.
By road
You
can also reach this place by bus which is available from Howrah bus terminus in
Kolkata. It will take around 5 hrs from Kolkata and there is also well
established road connectivity from Asansol, Durgapur, Bankura and Jamshedpur.
By Air
The
nearest airport of this place is Netaji Subhash International Airport in
Kolkata. Taxis and private cabs are available from this airport.
