Cherrapunji – Land of Gorgeous beauty and Overwhelming People

Positioned on the southern edge of the Khasi hills in the Indian state of Meghalaya, Cherrapunji is a small town at an elevation of 1484 meters above the sea level at a distance of 60 km from the capital city of Shillong.
Locally popular as Shora it is among the top tourist places of Meghalaya with exotic natural beauty and unanimous beautiful setting.

Formerly crowned as the wettest place in earth now it is ranked second as Mawsynram the neighbouring location also placed in Meghalaya has been crowned as the rain capital of the world but that fact has not changed its tourism status in the tourist map of Meghalaya as tourists flock to this place in huge number. The annual rain received by this place is recorded about 12, 000 mm annually with the highest received in 2010 at 13472.4 mm.

Things to do: Beautified with pristine waterfalls, perpetual clouds and exotic people, Cherrapunji is also known as a virgin territory owing to its scenic appeal and unmatched natural beauty. The most amazing phenomenon that you will come across after visiting this place is that the rainfall mostly occurs in this place during the night time. This place is fame for oranges so make sure to try some of fresh catch oranges.

The view of the Bangladesh plains from the top of the hills in Cherrapunji is majestic and has also been attracting wide number of tourists from around the world.

Trekking is one of the major activities that you can indulge while advancing to several places in and around the vicinity. Khasi Monoliths, Eco Park, David Scott Memorial, Krem Phyllut Cave, Dainthlen waterfalls, and Double Decker Root Bridge are some of the major attractions in and around Cherrapunji.    
 
Although Cherrapunji is not a shoppers stop but you can always purchase some memorable gift items to keep it as a memory. Far away from the maddening crowds it is an ideal place to spend a happy and fun along with an adventurous and thrilling time.    

Travel Tips:
I  Include umbrellas, rain coats and woollen clothes while venturing, as rain could hit this place in any time of the year.

    The roads are narrow with sharp turns so be careful while driving to this place.

    Avoid trekking in isolated areas alone.

   Carry a first aid kit, energy capsules, packet of snacks and a bottle of water while indulging in trekking and sightseeing.

   Do make sure to carry a video/camera to capture some rare sight of nature.

Best time to Visit: The best time to visit this place is from the months of September to October, and it is advised not to visit this place during May to August. As for some adventure seekers, you may opt to visit.

How to Reach:
By Air: The nearest airport is located in Guwahati at an expanse of 188 km from Cherrapunji. One can also opt for the government run helicopter service from Guwahati to Shillong.  

By Train: The nearest train station is also placed in Guwahati.


By Road: One can easily avail a bus/taxi from the airport and railway station to Cherrapunji. It is well connected by road to other north eastern states of India.
