Brief Synopsis of Golaghat, Assam

Etymology

According to historians the name Golaghat is derived from the two words Gola which means market and Ghat meaning the port of Transport. The point of origination dates back its history to 19^th century when Marwari people walked here and established the market near the estuary of Dhansiri River.

To understand the history of this place one would require travelling to a period of Colonial era when British took over Assam. It was in 1846 during British administration the valley of Doyang-Dhansiri was merged with Golaghat subdivision of Sibsagar District.
